Hounds of MajenalaAlane Schaefer & Jen Robinson
Our history, from Jen: We have had Afghan Hounds as pets for over 20 years. We went to local dog shows as spectators regularly. However we did not start showing them until around 1993. We went to a local show to watch the Afghan Hounds and to pick up our new family member, Scimitar's Harley, "Harley" who was coming to us strictly as a 'pet'. When I saw 6 month old black and white domino, named Possum (Ch. Summerwnd Anutra Phenomenon, "Possum") standing on a table getting ready to go in the ring, I was hooked. We located a very talented handler, Alicia Morrison, who taught me everything I know about showing. Harley was my first juniors show dog. She came to us spayed, so when I tired of the Juniors scene, My mom and I called up the person that owned Possum, Rosemary Sutton. I learned everything I know about breeding and coat care from her. Sadly, though not surprisingly, Possum was not available. She did however have Possum’s litter sister “Cinderella” (Ch Summerwind-Anutra Rnd Midnite) available. She came to us at 18 months old, and was the love of my life! She became my first champion a few hard years later. A year and a half after getting Cinders, Possum came to us (she was my mom's first Champion). We've had quite a few hopefuls over the years, some who turned out, some who didn't. Regardless of that, I'm very proud to say that our dogs are pets first and show dogs second. Once a dog enters our house, we intend to keep it for life. We're not in the habit of getting rid of dogs to make room for the next up and coming show dog, and have only had to rehome one who could get along with the others. In 2000 we bred our first litter(Wynsyr Mor-Mo-Mentm Sumrwnd x Jubilan's Squash Blossom) thus starting our own kennel, Majenala. The star of our kennel, “Echo” (Majenala Smashing Sensation) came out of that litter. 4 years ago, we got an In Concert bitch, Diva, from Holly Jorgensen (Ch Majenala EgoTrip In Concert) who was my mom's second Champion. We have had 2 litters since then, both by Echo X Diva. So we have a new round of very potential puppies to add to the Majenala roster. After 15 years in the breed, we’re still here. That's the ultimate testament that we live and breathe Afghan Hounds. We have not by any stretch of the imagination had an easy road to get here. Being the new person in this breed is not easy. More than once I've been raked over the coals. I've had a Junior's mom accuse my spayed bitch of being in season because her son couldn't control his dog. We've been yelled at and degraded for buying a dog from a certain breeder. We've been threatened by a breeder to have my dog taken away if I dared to show her. We've had a co-breeder (who we didn't get the dog from) demand a dog back because we got another one from a different breeder. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The Hounds of Majenala has 2 main goals that we have tried and will continue to try to attain. 1: We want to help any newcomers in the breed, in any way we can, and try to spare them from all the ordeals we were put through. And 2: We want to breed the quality of dogs that can compete with the imports that keep cleaning up out here in America. All our Best,
